Alina joined GOERT in 2016 as the Bring Back the Bluebirds Project Coordinator. Alina is a researcher, ecologist, and mom to two spirited young girls. She can be found at her desk (rarely) or around southern Vancouver Island cycling and hiking with her girls (mostly). Given her love of Garry Oaks, she considers herself lucky to not only a part of GOERT, but also that her house is within a Garry Oak ecosystem.
Alina comes from a population ecology and community ecology background, and works in research, and science communications. Alina is a graduate of the University of Alberta's Biology program and is currently working on a Masters of Professional Communications through Royal Roads University. She is interested in rare species stewardship, ecological restoration, conservation, and sharing her love of ecology with her daughters and local school children.
Shannon recently joined the GOERT team in September 2016 as the Membership and Events Coordinator. Shannon’s background is photojournalism, spending 20 years at the Calgary Herald and then another 10 years operating her own successful freelance business. After moving to the island 4 years ago, Shannon made a career changing decision and enrolled at Royal Roads University where she received a certificate in Professional Communications in 2013. Since then, Shannon has honed her skills at other Non-Profits in communications, marketing and media relations. She is excited about her new position and eager to share her enthusiasm about GOERT. The unique gnarly Garry Oak captured her imagination the moment she laid eyes on one! Want to become a member? Contact Shannon: firstname.lastname@example.org
